Harnessing VAK Learning Styles in HRM Learning and Development

Learning and development in HRM are closely related to the field of physiology. From this article, I’m trying to make a connection to another psychological theory that may be applied to HRM learning and development. The reason for connecting these two areas is when it comes to learning and development in HRM it is essential to understand cognitive psychology and understand how individuals absorb and process information. Though this is often categorized as a learning theory rather than a strictly psychological theory, I believe still we can see this from a psychological point of view as this intersects with cognitive psychology in terms of understanding how different sensory modalities influence learning processes. This VAK learning styles model, introduced by Walter Burke Barbe in 1979 suggests that learners have preferred sensory modalities through which they best acquire knowledge: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (VAK). As Human Resource Management (HRM) holds a central position in nurturing employee growth and optimizing organizational effectiveness, this strategy can be adopted  ( Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic ) into training, development, and communication methodologies.. By recognizing and catering to diverse learning preferences, HRM can enhance employee engagement, retention, and overall effectiveness.

According to Sarasin (1999), “… teaching cannot be successful without knowledge of learning styles and a commitment to matching them with teaching styles and strategies”.

What is Visual Learning Style:

As we all know for some scenarios, a single graph can represent 1000 words if we can visually illustrate relationships in the data it is really simple to understand. So visual learners grasp information best through visual aids such as charts, diagrams, graphs, and videos. They prefer seeing information in written or pictorial form, and they tend to have a strong spatial awareness. Visual learners often excel in subjects like art, geography, and mathematics, where visual representations play a significant role in understanding concepts. In HRM, by adding visual elements into trainings, meetings, townhall meetings, notices boards, emails and even in communication flyers, management can significantly enhance comprehension. using graphics to explain complex data, creating visually appealing training manuals, and incorporating videos into e-learning modules are effective strategies for engaging visual learners.

What is Auditory Learning Style:

As for visual learners, there are some unique methods used for Auditory learners. For them, the more effective way to learn is listening. They prefer spoken explanations, lectures, discussions, and audiobooks. These learners have a keen sense of hearing and can easily grasp information through verbal instructions. Subjects such as languages, music, and literature are often favored by auditory learners due to their emphasis on verbal communication and auditory stimuli. HRM can accommodate auditory learners by offering live training sessions, facilitating group discussions, and providing audio recordings of important meetings or presentations. Additionally, incorporating storytelling and verbal explanations into training programs can resonate with auditory learners and enhance their learning experience.

According to Kanar (1995), auditory learners have congenial personalities, enjoy conversing and listening, and find it challenging to follow written instructions. For them to comprehend and learn, they must hear and listen to an explanation. Rather than painting pictures in their thoughts like visual learners do, these individuals filter information by listening and repeating what they hear. They are skilled at using "talk" to solve issues and tell stories. In addition, students write their graded notes and then listen to them, taking notes while "listening" to past conversations, contributing to class participation by asking questions whispering new information on their own, and so on.

Kinesthetic Learning Style:

Kinesthetic learners are tactile and hands-on in their approach to learning. They thrive in environments where they can physically engage with materials, manipulate objects, and participate in activities. Kinesthetic learners learn best through doing, experimenting, and experiencing. They often excel in subjects like physical education, laboratory sciences, and vocational training, where practical application is integral to learning. HRM can cater to kinesthetic learners by incorporating interactive workshops, simulations, and role-playing exercises into training programs. Providing opportunities for on-the-job training, mentorship, and experiential learning can allow kinesthetic learners to actively engage with concepts and apply them in real-world scenarios, enhancing their learning outcomes.

For HRM

Understanding the VAK learning styles can be beneficial for diverse learning preferences. Management or HRM can incorporate visual aids, verbal explanations, and hands-on activities into their lessons to cater to the needs of different learners. By offering a variety of instructional methods, teachers can create an inclusive learning environment that maximizes student engagement and comprehension. So when designing training and development initiatives, HRM should consider the diverse learning styles of employees and incorporate a mix of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements. Offering a variety of learning modalities ensures that all employees have opportunities to engage with the material in ways that align with their preferences and strengths. By providing flexibility and choice in learning formats, HRM can foster a culture of continuous learning and skill development within the organization.

Communication and Engagement:

For employee engagement, and communications to employees from management or HRM, it is important to understand employees' preferred communication styles based on their VAK preferences.HRM can utilize visual aids for presenting data and information, conduct regular meetings or town halls for verbal communication, and organize team-building activities or workshops for hands-on engagement. By tailoring communication strategies to align with employees' learning styles, HRM can improve information retention, collaboration, and overall engagement.

Conclusion:

Incorporating VAK learning styles into HRM practices can significantly enhance employee development, communication, and engagement within organizations. By recognizing and accommodating diverse learning preferences, HRM can create more effective training and development programs, improve communication effectiveness, and foster a culture of continuous learning and growth. By leveraging the strengths of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities, HRM can maximize the potential of its workforce and drive organizational success.

HRM really shines when it tunes into these individual preferences, making training more effective and boosting the team's overall productivity. Your experience adds a real-world touch to how important this is. Thanks for sharing your insights!
